Brentford's Sam Wood scores the opening goal against Birmingham City

This week saw the curtain come down on the final relics of Brentford’s 2008/09 championship winning squad. Uwe Rosler decided not to offer Marcus Bean and Sam Wood new contracts, whilst Karleigh Osborne left of his own accord seeking pastures new. That said, Kevin O’Connor still remains at the club but let’s face it, the man is timeless.

Bean perhaps could have hoped for an extension, given his involvement in recent months. Though ultimately it was not enough and he now finds himself searching for a new club. Whilst supporters may well be sorry to see Bean leave, I do feel that it was the correct decision.

Central midfield is an area where we have strength in depth. Rosler will certainly be looking to strengthen in that area over the summer, with the likes of Adam Forshaw at Everton or Dundee United’s Scott Robertson on his radar.

Marcus Bean has been a loyal servant to Brentford but now the time has come to step it up a level and push on as a club. I’m sure however that all Brentford supporters wish Marcus the best of luck in his future endeavours, so long as it’s not against us.

For Sam Wood, the writing has been on the wall for some time. The left winger has been on loan at Rotherham United since November with chances limited at Griffin Park early on in the campaign. Wood will be best remembered for his volley against Birmingham City but I will remember him for his never-say-die attitude week in, week out.

Again, I believe Rosler has made the right call. We are a club in transition, striving for that extra bit of quality. However, I would quite happily have seen a little more of Sam Wood this season and a lot less of Niall McGinn.

Karleigh Osborne departs the club after eight years, having progressed through the youth set-up. He was one of our own. It’s a shame that like many before him he walks away for nothing. A player with so much potential. If he gets his head down, he could well establish himself in the Championship.

It’s sad to see our team of champions at last dismantled but it had to be done. We still have King Kev representing our past, present and perhaps future - for me, the ‘Grey Goose’ still has a big role to play at Brentford Football Club.
