Victor Moses believes that Chelsea are still to see the best of him after he earned himself hero status by heading a late winner to beat Shakhtar Donetsk 3-2 in last night’s must-win Champions League Group E clash.

The 21-year-old winger came off the bench with 10 minutes to go and the tie finely-balanced at 2-2. In the last action of the game, he powered home his first European goal from Juan Mata’s corner to send the Chelsea faithful into raptures and get the defence of their crown back on track.

“Robbie [manager Roberto Di Matteo] told be to go out there and enjoy myself,” Moses said of his starring cameo at Stamford Bridge.

“He also told me to take on the full backs. I had 10 minutes and it was great to get the winning goal - a great feeling.

“It was a great result for us, I thought we deserved it. We had a few chances and I thought we had left it too late. But overall we are delighted with the three points.”

Of the significance of his winner, Moses said: “It was a vital goal but everyone has been working hard in recent weeks. We now have Juventus coming up, which won’t be an easy game but we have to give 100 per cent and try to get a point out there.

“That was my first Champions League goal and I’m so excited by it, hopefully there will be more to come.”

A product of Crystal Palace’s youth system, Moses is a real south Londoner and is ‘delighted’ to be back in the smoke and plying his trade at Stamford Bridge after a spell with Wigan.

Although born in Nigeria, Moses came to South Norwood as a 13-year-old lad and was soon spotted by the Eagles, scoring goals for fun in the Tandridge youth league.

From there he progressed into the Palace’s first team, making his debut in 2007.

He stayed there for three years before somewhat surprisingly moving north to Wigan Athletic.

This summer Chelsea decided bring him home and invest £9million in the wide man, having four offers rejected by the Lancashire side.

While you can take the boy out of south London, he admits will always be happier here.

Moses said of his return to the capital: “It feels great being a Chelsea player and playing in the Champions League.

“We won it last season. But being here at Stamford Bridge is fantastic for me.

“I’m a south London boy. Obviously I went up north and spent about three years there. But it’s so great to be back south London.

“I’ve kept my accent,” he laughs. “It’s where I grew up so you have keep it don’t you.”

A realistic and level-headed lad Moses knows that in a star-studded squad such as Chelsea’s, first team starts will be at a premium this season.

“To be honest I just want to play football and enjoy myself. We have great names here,” he said. “So many quality players, it’s good to be working with them.”

Working day in and day out with stars like Oscar, Eden Hazard and Juan Mata clearly gives Moses a buzz and he’s ready for the challenge.

“I’ve improved my game since coming - you can’t help it what with all the quality players here at Chelsea.

“But there is still a lot more to come from me too.”

Moses is also proving himself to be a vital player in Chelsea’s rise to the top of the Premier League, where they only relinquished top spot on Saturday after sitting the top of the pile for ten weeks.

The Blues face Liverpool on Sunday at the Bridge, and while Moses remains coy about his chances of starting after his starring role in in Europe, he’s already looking forward to it.

“Liverpool is going to be a great game,” he suggested.

“But we need to get our heads back together now after our Champions League win and start looking forward to getting the three points on Sunday.”
