Rafael Benitez has entered an angry war of words with former Inter Milan player Marco Materazzi today, branding the retired Italian international a “liar” over an attack on the Spaniard and his short tenure at the Serie A club.

The defender, who was on the end of Zinedine Zidane’s headbutt in the 2006 World Cup final and hung up his boots in 2011, hit out at Chelsea’s under-fire interim manager. describing life under Benitez at Inter as like “being back at school”.

Materazzi also suggested the coach had been lined-up as Jose Mourinho’s successor while the Portuguese was in position and had told him to take down photographs in his locker of his former coaches.

“Marco Materazzi is lying,” blasted a riled Benitez. “Everything that he says is a lie. Simple

“When he talks about me, the two things that he said about me when he was talking with Mourinho is a lie because nobody knew when I was going to Inter, even me. So it’s a lie.

“About the pictures, it’s a lie, so he’s a liar.”

Stories also emerged today of Mourinho texting Chelsea players owner Roman Abramovich, sparking rumours about a sensational return to Stamford Bridge for the Real Madrid coach, but Benitez refused to answer any questions about the Portuguese or matters off the field ahead of tomorrow’s Capital One Cup semi-final second leg tie at Swansea.

Instead the Blues boss said: “In Spain, as in England, we have the same situation: we have a window for football, tactics and Swansea; there is another window for other issues.

“We talk about contracts and other things at the other window. This window is for football and tactics.”
