Spurs and Everton handed transfer boost in race for in-demand striker

Tottenham and Everton’s hopes of landing Romelu Lukaku have been boosted after Atletico Madrid pulled out of the race for the Chelsea striker.

Lukaku had been strongly linked with a season-long loan move to Atletico but, according to Marca, the Spanish outfit have turned their attentions elsewhere following some underwhelming performances by the 21-year-old for Belgium at the World Cup.

Lukaku, who scored 16 goals during a loan spell at Everton last season, is a target for the Toffees and Mauricio Pochettino’s Spurs this summer.

The Belgian is also wanted by a number of clubs in Europe, and Jose Mourinho is unlikely to hand him a starting spot at Chelsea having agreed a £32million deal for Spain international Diego Costa, making a move away from Stamford Bridge likely.
