Tottenham and Everton’s hopes of landing Romelu Lukaku have been boosted after Atletico Madrid pulled out of the race for the Chelsea striker.

Lukaku had been strongly linked with a season-long loan move to Atletico but, according to Marca, the Spanish outfit have turned their attentions elsewhere following some underwhelming performances by the 21-year-old for Belgium at the World Cup.

Lukaku, who scored 16 goals during a loan spell at Everton last season, is a target for the Toffees and Mauricio Pochettino’s Spurs this summer.

The Belgian is also wanted by a number of clubs in Europe, and Jose Mourinho is unlikely to hand him a starting spot at Chelsea having agreed a £32million deal for Spain international Diego Costa, making a move away from Stamford Bridge likely.
