Juan Mata hailed Fernando Torres after his assist in the Euro 2012 final

Chelsea star Juan Mata revealed that Fernando Torres passed the ball to him in Spain’s 4-0 win over Italy in the Euro 2012 final because of their relationship.

The playmaker has been a staunch defender of his Blues team-mate during a season where Torres went over 24 hours on the pitch without scoring.

And Torres repaid the friendship with an assist in the final minutes of the victory.

“Torres told me he saw me and passed the ball because it was me,” Mata said.
