QPR beat Newcastle, Arsenal and Spurs as they make striker a record buy

Transfer News: QPR have signed French international striker Loic Remy from Marseille for an club record fee.

The 26 year-old has agreed a four-and-a-half year deal with the R’s and could make his debut against West Ham on Saturday if international clearance is granted.

The striker, who has scored four goals in 17 appearances for France, had been touted for a move to the Premier League in the past year with Arsenal, Newcastle and Tottenham being linked.

R’s manager Harry Redknapp was a fan of Remy at Tottenham and Marseille rejected a bid from the Lilywhites last season but the 26-year-old has fallen down the pecking order at L’OM and a cut-price deal has now been agreed.

The striker told the club’s official website: “Harry played a big part in me coming here. I spoke to him and Tony Fernandes at length and they made it clear they wanted me here. They gave me the right motivation to join QPR.

“I want to develop my game here. This season the objective is to stay up but beyond that we have greater objectives.

“After seven years in France, this is the right time for me to pursue a new challenge in the Premier League – the best League in the world.

“I am confident I can adapt to the Premier League. My main characteristics have taken me to the level I am at today but I am keen to keep improving in the Premier League.”

Redknapp has been a long-time admirer of the striker and he expressed his delight at the signing saying: “I’m delighted to bring him in – he’s a great buy for us.

“I didn’t think we’d get him to be honest but Tony Fernandes worked ever so hard on this. He wouldn’t give up on it, and it’s great that we now have him here with us.

“He’s always been a player I’ve admired. I’ve watched him on so many occasions throughout the last few years. I actually spent three or four hours with him last year so he knew what I thought of him, and I think that was important.

“He’s quick, can score goals and makes great runs. His movement is excellent. He’s got the potential to be a really outstanding striker.”

The decision marks a dramatic u-turn as on Friday, Redknapp has said that the 26-year-old had turned down a chance to move to Loftus Road.

“I went over last week to watch him play, not that I needed to as I watched him when I was at Tottenham,” the R’s boss said.

“I couldn’t get a meeting with him. I think he was in a position when I was at Tottenham, he was interested.

“He felt embarrassed when he came to see me to tell me that he didn’t want to come to QPR.

“I’ve got no problems with him. Newcastle are interested but he’s thinking about staying for Marseille.

“He hasn’t been playing. After that it’s hard. I think it’d have been good for him to come here and help us stay up.

“If he scores some goals and does well and we couldn’t survive, at least he’s in the shop window.

“If he does score the goals and we could stay up. He may change his mind. I’d like to get him if possible.”

Remy has been given the number 18 shirt by QPR.
