Hughes drawing on experience as he attempts to keep Rangers up

Mark Hughes admits he is drawing on his past success at Blackburn Rovers as he attempts to keep QPR in the Premier League.

When Hughes took over at Ewood Park in September 2004 he was charged with securing the club’s safety, a target he achieved as Rovers went on to end the season in 16th place.

The following year Hughes took Blackburn into the Uefa Cup via a top-six Premier League finish.

And ahead of QPR’s trip to Chelsea on Sunday, the Rs manager concedes it is those experiences which have convinced him he can keep his side clear of the drop this season.

“You do draw from it,” said Hughes. “When I took over at Blackburn we were second from bottom and we ended up 16th. We have gone through that as a manager and staff.

“We understand what it takes, I understand the Premier League, it’s where I’ve plied my trade and I’m sure my methods will help the club. It won’t be easy because the opposition we have got to play is tough, but I knew that when I took the job.”
