Shaun Derry says Rangers can’t afford to be complacent

Shaun Derry has warned his QPR team-mates they cannot repeat the failings they showed at Sunderland after Saturday’s dramatic win over Arsenal.

Rangers’ 2-1 victory over the Gunners at Loftus Road was a huge boost to their survival chances, coming just 10 days after they recorded a similarly unlikely 3-2 win against Liverpool.

However, the Rs followed the triumph against the Reds with a 3-1 hammering at Sunderland, and midfielder Derry insists there is no room for complacency if they are to stave off the threat of relegation.

“The pressure is off when you come up against the big five or six, but what I would like is for us to take heart from this result, unlike when we beat Liverpool last time,” said Derry. “We let ourselves down and we can’t do that.

“Whether that game [at Sunderland] came too quick for us I don’t know. We put in a lot of energy that night against Liverpool as well coming from two goals down into the final 10 minutes.

“We’re up against Manchester United away from home next, so again the pressure is off us. We’ve let ourselves down on numerous occasions this year but against Arsenal we didn’t.”

Victory over Arsenal was another personal triumph for Derry, who continues to defy his critics with performances of energy and industry in the QPR midfield.

“I would like to think that whoever has watched me this season and last would see that I play with a lot of passion and desire,” added Derry. “I pride myself on that, I always have done.

“I’m a novice at this level. I’m 34-year-old and I’m a novice, I’m forever learning. It’s a learning curve for me as well and I want to continue learning.”
