Tottenham youngster Tom Carroll was thrilled to be handed a Europa League start against Lazio on Thursday.

The midfielder was not overawed in a hostile atmosphere as Spurs claimed a creditable 0-0 draw.

“We had a team meeting at lunchtime and that’s when I heard I was starting,” Carroll said.

“I was excited and couldn’t wait for the game. I had a few nerves but you just have to deal with that.

“I try to get on the ball as much as I can and to influence the game, hopefully I did that. We had to work hard, keep our concentration and we dug in well.

“We needed a result and it was a good point in the end. We’ll now look to finish off with a win against Panathinaikos.

“On a personal level, it was probably the biggest game of me career so far. I’ve been involved in the last four or five matches now, I’m enjoying my football and hopefully that will continue.”
