Day encouraged by Dartford’s midweek thrashing

Welling United player-boss Jamie Day is hoping Blue Square Bet South play-off rivals Sutton United have not learned too many lessons this week ahead of their visit to Park View Road.

Sutton suffered a 6-1 thrashing at Dartford on Tuesday as they paid the price for playing an open, attacking game.

And Day (pictured right) hopes his men can take full advantage if the opposition throw bodies forward.

He said: “Hopefully Sutton will take the same approach and we can exploit that in the way that Dartford did.

“I’m sure it will be a very attacking game.

“But it can go both ways when you’ve just had a result like that.

“I expect Sutton to try and put a few things right.

“But we’ll need to be on top of our game because they’re right behind us in the table.”

Any slim hopes of finishing top disappeared with a 2-1 defeat at leaders Woking on Saturday.

But Day was delighted with the way his third-placed men recovered to win 4-0 at Maidenhead United on Tuesday.

He said: “I thought we played reasonably well at Woking.

“But full credit to the boys for bouncing back the way they did. For us now it’s all about cementing a play-off place.

“If we beat Sutton we’ll open up a seven-point gap over them.”

Full-back Connor McLaren appeared as a second-half substitute at Maidenhead after completing his loan move from Millwall.

Day added: “We needed cover at full-back and he can play either side.

“He’s a bit like Loui Fazerkeley in that he likes to get forward.”
