Fulham manager Martin Jol is confident Dimitar Berbatov can fill Clint Dempsey’s scoring boots after his two-goal home debut against West Brom.
The former Manchester United and Tottenham man put in a man-of-the-match performance as the Cottagers overcame West Brom 3-0 at Craven Cottage, scoring a sumptuous opener and converting a penalty.
The 31-year-old was a busy presence all over the pitch, showing the work-rate and desire he frequently lacked during his time at Manchester United.
Jol was impressed by Berbatov’s instant impact and believes the Bulgarian is the ideal man to soften the blow of losing last season’s top scorer Dempsey to Spurs on transfer deadline day.
“I was ever so pleased with Dimitar,” said Jol
“He was at the back; he was in midfield; he was up front; he scored a good goal, so I was happy.
“He wanted to give us the result, almost.
“I feel that if he’s fit then he will hopefully do what Clint Dempsey did for us because that was a big step back for us to lose him.”
