Fulham Transfer News: Tom Werner has praised Whites talisman Clint Dempsey
Liverpool chairman Tom Werner has lavished praise on Fulham midfielder Clint Dempsey, fuelling rumours that the Reds are planning a transfer bid.
The Whites talisman has scored 22 goals in 44 games this campaign and has been linked with a move to a bigger club.
Dempsey’s current deal expires at the end of next season and the Reds are a number of clubs thought to be keen on the American.
“We never talk publicly about our transfer targets,” Werner told Goal.com. “However, any team would be lucky to have Clint Dempsey playing on their squad.”
Former Reds director of football Damien Comolli admitted that he would be targeting the 29-year-old if he were still with the club.
“It is very difficult to say, but with the player having only one year left on his contract and his transfer fee probably reasonable, the answer is probably yes [he would make a bid],” Comolli said.
“I would not be surprised [if a big club moved for Dempsey] because for instance when Chelsea signed Raul Meireles from Liverpool last summer, Raul was 29, it was a very, very high amount [around £12 million].”
