Republic of Ireland assistant manager Marco Tardelli hopes Damien Duff will call a quick end to his international retirement just 10 days after announcing it.

The Fulham winger earned his 100th cap appearing for his country in Euro 2012 but vowed he’d never pull on a green shirt again.

Ireland will kick-off their World Cup qualifying campaign in Kazakhstan this week and Duff will not be in the squad but the Italian-born coach hopes that will change by the time they host Germany next month.

“I know he has said he has retired, but I hope he will be back for the Germany game. It is possible,” Tardelli said.

“I don’t know if he will or not, but I always see him during Fulham’s matches and I think it is possible, why not?

“He is a very good player. He said he has stopped but I hope he will come back.”
