Andy Hessenthaler was unhappy after his side threw away a 3-1 lead to lose 4-3 to the Dons

Gillingham boss Andy Hessenthaler was furious with his side after they threw away a 3-1 lead to lose against AFC Wimbledon.

Gavin Tomlin looked to have put the Gills well on the way to the win after scoring twice before Luke Moore pulled a goal back.

Tomlin set another goal up for Jo Kuffour to make it 3-1 after the hour mark.

But a Garry Richards own goal and a late Jack Midson brace saw the Dons emerge as victors.

“Terrible. There’s no excuses, it’s just not good enough. Schoolboy defending, at 3-1 up the game’s over and you should see the game out. The second goal they just switched off, no organisation at a short corner and nobody reacted to the situation,” Hessenthaler said.

“Hand on heart, at 3-3 I thought we were going to lose the game, because we just didn’t look like we were together defensively as a group. The game was far too stretched because we were too deep. We’re devastated in there and it’s time to change it.”

The defeat, their fourth in five games in all competitions, saw the Gills slip out of the play-off places in League Two, 11 points adrift of the automatic promotion spots.
