Jenkins hopes side start turning chances into goals against Lowestoft Town

» Cray Wanderers manager Ian Jenkins admits he is concerned by his side’s lack of potency in front of goal ahead of this weekend’s promotion six-pointer at home to Lowestoft Town.

The Wands have taken just two points from a possible six in their previous two matches with a 1-1 draw at Wealdstone followed by a 0-0 stalemate against Kingstonian on Saturday – despite dominating both contests and creating several chances.

The Hayes Lane tenants are traditionally one of the most attacking sides in the division and had scored 51 goals in their previous 25 league games this season.

Jenkins believes his forwards will soon rediscover their goalscoring touch and has urged them to do so for Sunday’s visit of Lowestoft, who have conceded 29 goals in 26 games so far.

He said: “In the first half we found it hard to break Kingstonian down, but we tweaked a couple of things at half-time and created more chances after that.

“They started with one man up front and tried to frustrate us, but we went a little bit more direct in the second half.

“They came to do a job on us. I know their manager and I know he was happy with a point.

“We’ve got to learn how to open up sides when they try to stop us from playing, as has happened a few times now this season as teams know we like to play football and score goals.

“You see it all levels, right up to the Premier League. The better sides try to play football and have to deal with people coming to their grounds and defending for the whole game.

“Our forwards have missed a few chances recently, which is unusual for them, but when they start scoring again I’m confident we’ll go back to winning these sort of games.”

Cray were lucky not to fall behind after 26 minutes on Saturday when Kingstonian’s Ryan Woods thumped a 25-yarder against the bar.

Three minutes before the break, Sam Clayton cut in from the left and jinked his way past Cray keeper Andy Walker, only to be denied by two goal-line clearances.

Sam Long was the star man for the Wands after the break, going close with an effort of his own before seeing his cross headed over by Tommy Whitnell.
