Hornets battle for third spot

Honiton Hornets’ Hockey Club’s seven-a-side Summer League Hockey season has reached its semi-finals week, writes Ann Reed.

The first to be played was Honiton 2nds v Chard and the second featured Newton Abbot v Ottery Crickets.

In the former match both sides worked hard to create opportunities which were, in general, not capitalised upon.

However, Honiton’s Caroline Hill scored a convincing goal in the first half, so Honiton went into the half time break one goal up.

However, the opposition levelled mid way through the second half and, as no further goals were scored, the match was decided by a penalty shoot-out.

Five members from each team took it in turn to strike the ball and at the end of this section each team had scored one goal (Becky Hammett for Honiton)

Into ‘sudden death’ went the next two players from each side – and both succeeded in defeating the opposition goalie for the first of each attempt (Amy Phillips for Honiton) but of the second pair it was only the Chard player who succeeded, so Chard go onto the finals in a fortnight’s time.

In the second semi of the evening Newton Abbot beat Ottery Cricket 3-1.

This game had its moment of controversy when a Newton player was carded! But her team are to be Chard’s opponents in the finals with Honiton playing Ottery for third and fourth placings also in a fortnight.
