Colin Tizzard hopes rain continues for course specialist Cannington Brook

Trainer Colin Tizzard is hoping the rain continues ahead of the £200,000 Betfair Chase at Haydock on Saturday where he saddles the 20-1 course specialist Cannington Brook.

Cannington Brook, the winner of three of his 16 starts and placed in seven of the others is unbeaten in two starts at Haydock. Tizzard admits the eight-year-old has plenty to find on his five rivals but believes that if the rain continues his charge will run a big race.

“I hope it rains at Haydock between now and Saturday and then Cannington Brook will make them all go,” Tizzard said after the going at Haydock was changed to soft, from good to soft, following 26 millimetres of rain since last Friday.

“He came out of his run at Ascot fine. He got knocked over three out and he never had a hard race at all.

“He is 30lb wrong with the others but he loves heavy ground and is unbeaten around Haydock. That is the only reason we are taking these horses on because of the way he can handle that Haydock heavy. We wouldn’t take them on anywhere else.

“I hope there is a bit more improvement to come from him as he needs to improve 20lb to place on Saturday, but the ground will help him.”

Haydock clerk of the course Kirkland Tellwright said on Thursday: “We have not had much rain since last night, but having walked the course today I have changed the going description to soft.

“We will see what tomorrow brings but the forecast is now for us to receive around 12 millimetres.

“For Friday, we are currently predicted three millimetres while Saturday is expected to be predominantly dry.”
