Frankel is set to gallop before racing on 2,000 Guineas day at Newmarket on Saturday where last year he won the first colts’ classic in breath-taking style.

His six-length victory in the 2,000 Guineas in 2011 continued his unbeaten run and proved to be the first of the four Group 1s he landed last season, adding the St James’s Palace Stakes, Qipco Sussex Stakes and Queen Elizabeth II Stakes.

He was later recognised as the best horse on the planet when rated 136 by the World Thoroughbred Rankings in January.

Frankel is reportedly still on target for his comeback race, the JLT Lockinge Stakes at Newbury on May 19, and is scheduled to work on the Rowley Mile with two other horses at 12.55pm where the going was on Tuesday amended to soft.

“The going-stick reading at 3pm today was 6.1 from 6.8 yesterday and the ground is now soft,” Newmarket Racecourses’ director of racing Michael Prosser revealed.

“The course has taken the rain well. It is in good order and I am happy with it. Plus, we are currently enjoying a warmer afternoon with some sunny spells.

“There is still some uncertainty about the forecast. But the current prediction we have been given is for dry weather during the day on Wednesday before rain moves in late afternoon/early evening with it expected to continue into Thursday morning. It is anticipated that we could receive 6 to 8 millimetres of rain.

“That appears to be the last significant rainfall before the start of the QIPCO Guineas Festival.

“On Friday, we are likely to be largely dry, while for Saturday there is only the possibility of light, isolated showers.”
