Trainer John Hills anticipates a big run from 100-1 shot Boomerang Bob in the QIPCO 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket on Saturday, where the going is now officially soft.

The son of Aussie Rules has been a model of consistency so far, finishing runner-up four times since he made a winning debut at Kempton last May. He rounded off his two-year-old campaign with a brace of seconds in Group events at Ascot and Chantilly.

Boomerang Bob reappeared last month in the seven-furlong, Group 3 AON Greenham Stakes, finishing second, a length adrift of Caspar Netscher who reopposes.

“We know he likes the ground and he can handle it. The unforeseen part is the trip,” Hills admitted. “All the boys at home think he will stay [the mile distance of the 2000 Guineas] but we won’t know until we run him.

“He has got to show improvement, but he has got a very, very sporting chance of finishing in the first four.”

“We were very happy with his run at Newbury. It was his first run for a long time so he should come on considerably. He is a lovely horse, and although we are going there as an outsider, we are in great shape, we like the ground and we are going to have a crack at it.

“I don’t think he is a better horse with cut in the ground, but we know he goes through it whereas some of the others may not, so we are not concerned about the going.

“He picked up an injury in July and wasn’t able to run in the second half of last season, so he ran a very good trial at Newbury under the circumstances. He seems in great form.

“He grew an inch over the winter, has a super temperament for the job and a terrific turn of foot. This is a tough race, but at the same time it’s a very open sort of race.

“He has a lot of speed, and although he can be keen, especially first time out, he does relax nicely in his races, so he will give himself every chance of getting the mile – but you never know until you try.”
