The first crop of 2008 Derby winner New Approach heads the betting for both the 2000 Guineas and 1000 Guineas following impressive victories at Royal Ascot.

Progeny of the rookie stallion won three races at the Royal meeting as Godolphin’s Tha’ir took the Chesham Stakes, following on from the victories of Dawn Approach in the Coventry Stakes and Newfangled in the Albany Stakes.

The Jim Bolger trained Dawn Approach has since been installed as favourite for the first colt’s classic next year, while John Gosden’s Newfangled is the market leader in the fillies equivalent.

“It’s fantastic and what a result for New Approach - he’s a brilliant first-season stallion with three winners at Royal Ascot. It’s unbelievable,” said Godolphin’s racing manager Simon Crisford after Tha’ir’s victory.

“All three of his winners look really, really top class. That’s the most exciting thing for us about our flat racing project because he is going to be the future.

“I am really excited and it’s been a fantastic week for the team. We came here hoping that we would do well but we were really pleased and lucky to have this winner.

“The horse has improved with every race. He has been to Ripon twice and his second start there stood him in good stead for today. He has stepped up again today”

Trainer Saeed bin Suroor added: “He improved a lot for his last run and five days ago did a really good piece of work. His rider was surprised at how much he had improved and thought he had a very good chance today. Stepping up to seven furlongs suited him and he could go to Goodwood now.”

Meanwhile Dawn Approach is expected to remain in training with Bolger for the remainder of the season, despite news that Godolphin has bought a majority share in the unbeaten juvenile, for an undisclosed sum.

Crisford said: “We are delighted Dawn Approach will race for Godolphin and look forward to seeing him race at the highest level throughout his career.

“It is fantastic how well New Approach has started his stallion career and Dawn Approach appears to have inherited many of his qualities.”
