Conjecture over the next race for the unbeaten Frankel was ended on Sunday as connections revealed they had a preference for the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot.

News of the intended target for the Sir Henry Cecil trained four-year-old was revealed the day after he landed the 1600m JLT Lockinge Stakes at Newbury, his victory boosting his unbeaten run to 10 races and all over distances of up to a mile.

An immediate step up in trip had been mooted for the son of Galileo, who will forever be remembered for the astonishing ease of his victory in last year’s 2000 Guineas.

Owned by Prince Khalid Abdullah, he holds entries for the Royal meeting in the one mile Queen Anne Stakes on June 19 and the 150th Anniversary of Prince of Wales’s Stakes over 10 furlongs the next day.

But the likelihood of an immediate step up in distance was effectively ended on Sunday by Teddy Grimthorpe, Prince Khalid Abdullah’s racing manager.

“It was very pleasing the way he did it at Newbury,” Grimthorpe said. “Obviously we were a bit apprehensive after the injury scare (last month), but he’s done it really nicely so we’re delighted.

“I’ve spoken to Sir Henry this morning and the horse is fine and very pleased with himself.

“All being well, it will be Ascot next. I would think the Queen Anne would be the most likely race.”
