Long Run continues to head the betting for the King George VI Chase on Boxing Day, following the announcement of 31 entries for Kempton Park’s showpiece race of the season.

The Nicky Henderson trained seven-year-old bids to reclaim the King George crown he secured in the postponed 2010 race, but conceded last year when finishing runner up to five-time winner Kauto Star who has since been retired.

William Hill PR director Kate Miller said: “Whilst Kauto Star has dominated the William Hill King George for the last six years, the entries this year demonstrate what a fantastic race it is. The legacy of the King George being the mid-season championship is set to continue.

“The very best from Ireland, including the unbeaten Sir Des Champs, are set to take on the pick of the home challenge, including strong teams from Paul Nicholls, Nicky Henderson and Philip Hobbs.

“As things stand, we are expecting a competitive field with the winner likely to head the market for the Gold Cup next March.”

Barney Clifford, Kempton Park’s head of racing and clerk of the course, said: “These entries delight us in terms of the depth of quality. Kauto Star will be a hard act to follow, but there will be huge support for the popular Long Run as he bids to regain his William Hill King George VI Chase crown.”

“We also have the new kids on the block coming through and taking on the established champions – both Cue Card and Grands Crus will be admirable additions to the King George mix.

“The clock is now counting down to one of the most eagerly anticipated horse races of the year.”

King George VI odds (William Hill): 4-1 Long Run, 5-1 Grands Crus, 8-1 Finian’s Rainbow, Riverside Theatre, Silviniaco Conti, 10-1 Bobs Worth, Cue Card, Sir Des Champs, 12-1 Kauto Stone, Sizing Europe, 14-1 Al Ferof, 16-1 First Lieutenant, For Non Stop, The Giant Bolster, 20-1 Hunt Ball, 25-1 Captain Chris, Champion Court, Cristal Bonus, 33-1 Albertas Run, Calgary Bay, Diamond Harry, Wishfull Thinking, 40-1 Menorah, 50-1 Bold Sir Brian, Imperial Commander, Nacarat, Poquelin, Wayward Prince, 66-1 Foildubh, Gauvain, 100-1 Saint Are (EW ¼ 1,2,3)
