David O’Meara has revealed that connections of Group 2 winner Blue Bajan, a three time hurdle winner, decided against a return to obstacles and he will instead be aimed at the Yorkshire Cup.

Blue Bajan secured O’Meara’s biggest win in his three years as a trainer when he landed the Group 2 Henry II Stakes at Sandown last May, less than two weeks after finishing runner-up in the 2011 Yorkshire Cup.

In the York race last year he finished half a length adrift of Duncan who at his next start franked the form by winning the Irish St Leger. This year O’Meara’s stable star looks set to go up against a host of big names that include the likes of Red Cadeaux, Fame And Glory, Treasure Beach and Dandino.

“Blue Bajan has the Yorkshire Cup as his aim in May,” O’Meara confirmed.

“I wasn’t allowed to send Blue Bajan hurdling this winter, which is a shame given that he beat Overturn at Goodwood.

“To be fair, he’s broken down twice and the owners, the Hollowoods, daren’t risk him again.

“He surprised me winning a Group race. I was looking at races like the Ebor and Northumberland Plate but the owners wanted to win a Group race and they were right.

“His Sandown win is probably the highlight of my career so far but from Blue Bajan’s point of view I think the Goodwood Cup [close third] was probably a better run as he gave them all a penalty.”

Ed Dunlop, trainer of 2011 Melbourne Cup runner-up Red Cadeaux confirmed the Yorkshire Cup as a target for the six-year-old who has won over £800k from five wins and a series of big-race placings.

“Red Cadeaux has wintered very well and he looks a stronger horse,” Dunlop said. “He had a long break after Hong Kong and has just started doing some faster work.

“We are happy with what we are seeing from him so far. The Yorkshire Cup is a possible starting point.”

Dandino’s trainer James Fanshawe said: “He looks really well and I am very pleased with him. The Yorkshire Cup is a race we shall look at, although he will definitely have a run first in either the Further Flight Stakes at Nottingham or the John Porter Stakes at Newbury.”
