Spillane takes Dagenham & Redbridge player of the year award.
Michael Spillane has been named Dagenham & Redbridge’s Player of the Season and is delighted his gamble to make the move from west to east London has paid off, writes Josh Richards.
The 23-year-old had just 14 minutes of action with League One side Brentford before moving, initially on loan, in November to Daggers who were inside the League Two relegation zone and on a run of six straight league defeats.
But Spillane has been a vital part of the incredible turnaround to earn the club safety having netted four goals and been redeployed from defence to midfield.
And the former Norwich City and Luton Town man believes his Player of the Season trophy shows just how comfortable he is as part of the Daggers team.
“I left Brentford and just wanted to play football, regardless of the money,” he said. “I’m playing regularly here and I’m enjoying it and you can see that in my performances. When you play with a smile on your face you play better.
“I don’t think I’ve looked forward to games as much as I have here.
“Every Saturday and Tuesday I can’t wait for the games, so it’s a shame the season has finished.
“My form hasn’t surprised me. I’ve always believed in myself and I still think I could play at a higher level.
“Going to a team, at the bottom of the league was not ideal, but it was a challenge I was relishing and I’m glad I came. The trophy was a nice touch to end the season.”
Spillane, who found life tough at Griffin Park under manager Uwe Rosler, says he now feels at home with Daggers.
And the defender believes his relationship with John Still has been the contributing factor.
“I came here and the gaffer gave me a chance when no-one was willing to touch me, so given the chance I’ve proved a lot of people wrong,” Spillane added.
“I’ve got a good relationship with the gaffer and he trusts me. When you have a good relationship with your players I think that makes a difference. I enjoy working under him.
“In January I wanted to repay that faith by signing here for a year-and-a- half, I’ve helped keep them up and I’m enjoying it.
“I’m settled here, I’ve signed for another year, and got a baby on the way in July, so I’m looking forward to next season.”
