But Daggers chief Thompson believes history should be left in the past.

Dagenham & Redbridge managing director Steve Thompson is calling for history to remain that way on Saturday when Daggers host Rotherham United.

This weekend represents the first occasion where Steve Evans returns to Victoria Road since he was in charge at Boston United 10 years ago.

Evans, now the Millers boss, was at the helm when Boston and the Daggers, then under the management of Garry Hill, were going nose-to-tail for the Conference title.

The Pilgrims won that race and a subsequent place in the Football League, though Evans and former Boston chairman Pat Malkinson were charged by the Football Association with breaking a rule over player registrations.

They both received fines and the club was docked four points for the following season, much to the anger of Dagenham.

At the time they wanted the points deduction to apply to the previous season, and in turn win Daggers promotion to the Football League.

But that never materialised and Saturday surprisingly represents the first time Evans has made the return.

However, Thompson believes it should be left firmly in the past as they prepare to host sixth-placed Rotherham.

“It happened 10 years ago but people live in the past,” he said.

“Steve Evans is a manager of a different club now and it should just be left the way it is.

“There is no plan to treat Saturday’s game as any different to any other league game.”

And from manager John Still’s point of view, he is solely focused on getting his team to produce on the football pitch, rather than the issue of Evans.

“The whole incident was before my time, but he was at Crawley when we played them away last season,” said Still.

“He wasn’t in charge for the return, but from my perspective I have to put personalities to one side and focus on getting a result on the football pitch.

“How other people perceive it is up to them, but for me I have to focus on the matter of a football match.”
