Ranking points to attract star players to classic

BDO points on offer at Sheppey Darts Classic.
The Sheppey Darts Classic returns next week and the organiser is hoping it will be bigger and better than ever with £7,000 prize money up for grabs.
It’s the tenth year that the event will take place, and since its inception organiser Tony Cox has strived to attract top players with the promise of BDO points at stake, and this year he has pulled it off for the first time.
Among the top names set to feature at the Merlins Complex in Leysdown will be Kent star Steve Douglas, who is currently 11th in the BDO Men’s Invitation rankings, and former World Matchplay winner Peter Evison.
Cox said that support from pro and semi-pro players has helped boost the prestige of the event.
“This year for the first time we have got BDO ranking points on it,” he said. “It makes a big difference, it’s taken ten years to get them.
“We do a £7,000 prize fund which is more than a lot of the BDO events. We have been pushing for it, and luckily we managed to get it.
“We are going to get a lot of the BDO players looking to get a few points.
“And that means we’ve got a lot of the ranked players, so it’s going to be pretty good, we have got more entries at the moment than we have had at this stage in any other year.”
He said in recent years the prize money has been affected by the world financial crisis, but it has been given more support this year.
He said: “Every year it has gone from strength to strength. This year is going to be the best, this year we have got walk on girls like they have on television, it’s the little things that are going to make it.”
The winners will receive invitations to the 2012 Winmau World Masters and the International Play-Offs for the 2013 Lakeside World Professional.
Entry forms will be accepted on the day, but preferably completed beforehand. Forms can be dowloaded from www.sheppeydarts.com,
