Bowers boost

Weston boxer Adam Bowers boosted his confidence with a fine victory at Lydney.

TWENTY-three-year-old Adam Bowers travelled with Weston Amateur Boxing Club to Lydney, looking to get back to winning ways.

Adam has had a shaky start to the sport, but is improving all the time. However, he needed a good result to give him confidence.

He faced local lad Steve Lewis, who received loud applause when announced to the crowd. Adam was up against it, with three judges from Gloucester and the referee from the home club.

Lewis shot out of his corner, but Bowers matched him punch for punch for the first round. Adam was told by his cornermen John Cleary and Keith Ambrose to make more room between him and his opponent and get cleaner punches off.

Bowers jabbed Lewis consistently in the second round and held off his opponent. The Weston boxer was superb in the final round, with the officials making him a unanimous winner.

Bowers will feature again at Exmouth on May 19. Weston’s first female boxer Mel George, aged 16, boxes for Weston on Sunday (13th) in Gosport, while Wesley Williams (11) and Lee Ayres (13) make their debuts on May 26 at Synwell.
