Former England cricket captain Graham Gooch has been awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of East London.

The legendary batsman and Essex captain became the latest well-known face to be honoured by the institution’s School of Architecture and the Visual Arts.
Gooch, who is currently England’s batting coach, said at the graduation ceremony at the O2 arena today (Tuesday), that he was proud to have been awarded the doctorate.
“I feel truly honoured to have been chosen for this award and I’ll think fondly of this day for many years to come,” he added.
“As I grew up in East London and first started playing cricket here, it’s always a place that has remained close to my heart and this award is something I will really cherish.
Gooch’s, whose father was a cabinet-maker in Stratford, was named Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1980 and Professional Cricketers’ Association Player of the Year in 1990.
UEL vice chancellor, professor Patrick McGhee, added: “Graham Gooch is a true sporting legend who will go down in history as one of England’s greatest cricketers.
“It’s been a great privilege to meet Graham and I’m delighted to present him with this honorary award.”
