England’s record run scorer in One Day Internationals was full of praise for Surrey’s pace duo

England legend Paul Collingwood believes that Surrey duo Jade Dernbach and Stuart Meaker have a big future in the game.

The three-times Ashes winner and World Twenty20 winning captain hailed the bowling pair after they took two wickets apiece as Surrey beat Durham by 60 runs in yesterday’s Clydesdale Bank 40 over competition.

“They’re very good,” Collingwood said. “They have a lot of pace and a lot of skill.

“They produce good slower balls and they do put you under pressure.

“On a pitch like that it was hard to score the boundaries off them.”

The 35-year-old, who scored 10 centuries at Test level, believes that Surry have the abilities to do well in the competition that they won last year.

“Surrey look a decent outfit,” he added.

“They have a lot of bases covered and are very good in the field. They are a good unit. They pretty much attack all the time with the bat.”

The Durham skipper yesterday felt his side had the worst of the Kia Oval wicket and that proved to be the difference.

“We probably got the worst of the wicket,” Collingwood added. “We lost the toss and batted second. It was very slow and turned a fair bit but we need to convert 20s and 30s into 70s and 80s to win these games.

“It was disappointing to lose the game.

“I thought we had a good chance after restricting them to 220 but we had the worse of the conditions.

“The pitch was very dry and we never seemed to be able to get the boundaries.”
