Exmouth Archers turned out in big numbers on the first Sunday of May for the opening outdoors county event of the season, writes Sami Glover.
The organisers were the Company of Archers at Exeter School and archery clubs from all over Devon and Cornwall sent archers to compete in what is an annual historic event.
The competition itself is made up of two events contested on a single day.
The morning sees a traditional 2-way longbow shoot whilst the afternoon session was an ‘all-discipline’ 6-dozen round called a ‘National’.
Fortunately the weather did not play too damaging a role on proceedings as the forecasted midday arrival of bad weather did not materialise.
However, the wind did make conditions challenging!
Once again the Exmouth Archers did themselves proud in both the adult and junior categories.
The archers were also honoured to have as the special guest of honour presenting post-tournament trophies, the Mayor of Exeter.
The Exmouth Archers involved were;
In the Open National (the numbers after each player denotes first hits, then gold’s and the third figure is their final score), the Gents Recurve, Len Luck (72, 14, 484), the Gents Recurve, David Knight (70, 7, 380), the Gents Compound, Phil Carder (72, 61, 626), the Gents Compound, Chris Colwill (72, 56, 616), the Gents Compound, Neil Bennett (71, 46, 579), the Gents Barebow, Philip Smith (44, 3, 218), the Gents Barebow, Ian Evans (45, 3, 189), the Gents Barebow, Rob Drew (33, 2, 103) and in the Junior Gents Barebow, David Smith (30, 1, 112).
In the Open Short National; Junior Gents Recurve, Matthew Broom (67, 10, 387) and the Junior Ladies Compound, Jessica Luck (72, 31, 550).
The Open Junior National; Ladies Recurve, Maureen Spiller (72, 16, 464).
The next shoot for the Exmouth Archers is an event they stage themselves taking place over June 9/10 when local archers will compete with archers from many other counties.
