Frankel was retired on Saturday amongst emotional scenes at Ascot after extending his unbeaten run to 14 races when winning the £1.3million QIPCO Champion Stakes.

Frankel, the highest rated racehorse in the world, had minutes earlier passed his toughest test when landing the feature race on unsuitable ground from last year’s winner Cirrus Des Aigles, the second best on official ratings.

The Sir Henry Cecil trained superstar looked to have it all to do when he fluffed the start but quickly recovered to lie fourth of the six strong field after three furlongs.

He continued his progress and challenged two furlongs out before being shaken up by jockey Tom Queally to assert inside the last furlong in what his owner Prince Khalid Abdulla later confirmed would be his last racecourse appearance.

“He didn’t like the crowd and he was sort of labouring in the ground. But he was very relaxed,” Sir Henry said.

“I have enjoyed it all (training Frankel). He is the best I’ve ever had, the best I’ve ever seen. I’d be very surprised if there has ever been a better.”

Queally, who has ridden Frankel in all of his 14 victories said: “These were not ideal conditions but he still proved what a champion he is.

“I’m just so proud to have been associated with him. To have had this opportunity has been a million to one shot. It’s been an amazing journey.”
