SAFFRON Walden Golf Club’s scratch team suffered a comprehensive loss away against title favourites Brampton Park 6-0 in the CAGU Division 1 last week.

The Walden team were always going to be up against it facing a number of CAGU A players, especially in Brampton’s back yard.

Hit by unavailability the Walden team put up a fighting attempt to cause an upset. Graham Goodman and Archie Adams were first out against current county champion Jody Greenhall and Owen Cousins. The Walden pairing started well and shot to a 2-up lead after nine holes.

Greenhall and Cousins then demonstrated their true ability and four birdies in the remaining nine holes and a couple of wild drives by Walden saw Brampton win 4-up.

In the next match Richard Southall and Cameron Brown were up against an in-form pairing of county vice captain Owen Davies and Simon Burns. Although The Walden pairing played well the Brampton pairing played even better and won 5-up.

Although this was a big loss for Walden they have already played two of their toughest fixtures away - winning one and losing this one.

They now have Abbotsley away next and then a run of home fixtures which should be to Waldens’ advantage.
