The two had tied on 142, both having shot a pair of 71s in the 36-hole event.

They halved the first hole at Porters Park, then came down the 18th.

Both were out of position off the tee. Smith put it left of the green, but Brooks had to chip to the middle of the fairway. He then put his approach on the right fringe.

Smith’s chip was short. He then chipped again to six feet, while Brooks was just inside that.

Smith missed, Brooks holed and became the second Brickendon Grange player to win a Herts major this year following Robert Daw’s success in the Herts Salver.

Aaron Frost of Knebworth was third on 144.

England International Callum Shinkwin’s seven on the 36th hole cost him a place in the play-off, and he finished fourth.

The competition scratch score in the morning was 73 and 72 in the afternoon.

The best round of the day was from Letchworth’s Jack McGregor who had a second round 69.
