The team of Hertfordshire’s Trott, Joanna Rowsell and Wendy Houvenaghel qualified second fastest at the Olympic London Velodrome behind Canada.

The GB trio lit up their home crowd immediately with a startling opening lap, 0.8 seconds up on their rivals Canada.

They continued to press, well inside world record pace for much of the ride, fading slightly towards the end to post a 3mins 21.370secs with Canada’s team stopping the clock at 3mins 20.786secs.

GB women are the World and European team pursuit champions and will be looking to take top spot in the competition, which is doubling up as an Olympic test event for the venue.

The race will be shown on the BBC this evening (Friday).
