Middlesex fast bowler Tim Murtagh

Tim Murtagh and Toby Roland-Jones took four wickets apiece as Middlesex pulled off an astonishing three-run victory in their County Championship derby with Surrey at Lord’s.

Resuming on 95-4 with just 46 more needed, Surrey were firm favourites on the final morning, but eventually fell just short as they were shot out for 137 in a gripping final hour.

Middlesex’s hopes were raised when Gareth Berg pinned Tom Maynard (15) leg before in the third over, and Murtagh (4-43) then sent Chris Jordan’s leg stump flying before he had troubled the scorers.

When Gareth Batty was lbw to Murtagh playing across the line, Surrey were looking distinctly nervous at 104-7, but former England seamer Jon Lewis appeared to have steadied the ship.

Lewis (21 not out) decided attack was the best form of defence, hitting two thumping boundaries off Berg to relieve the pressure as he and Rory Hamilton-Brown added 22 for the eighth wicket.

But Hamilton-Brown, who had played a captain’s innings of 63, was caught behind off Roland-Jones (4-25), who then had Tim Linley taken at first slip by Dawid Malan.

With 11 still needed, Lewis nudged his side to within one stroke of victory, but last man Jade Dernbach attempted a big heave off Murtagh and Sam Robson took the catch at cover to seal a sensational win.
