Smith: It’s a pleasure
Romford Raiders forward AJ Smith has paid tribute to his linemates as the club chase an historic treble.
Smith netted twice for ENL and South East Trophy champions Romford in a 7-2 play-off win over MK Thunder last weekend.
And with two big games coming up against Invicta this weekend, he had nothing but praise for Matt Turner and captain Anthony Leone.
He said: “It’s a pleasure playing on that line with Turner and Leone.
“I think me and Turner have a good understanding of where each other is on the ice and what we’re trying to do. We both like to play attractive, passing hockey and I think it’s working well.
“Leone compliments us perfectly too as he works so hard and creates a lot of space for me and Matty to work in and he’s great at getting open in front of the net.”
Smith and Turner both finished with three points to their name in last weekend’s success at Rom Valley Way and are neck-and-neck in the club scoring charts behind Juraj Huska and player-coach Danny Marshall.
Smith currently has 82 points, Turner 81, while Leone has weighed in with a more than useful 58 points himself and Smith added: “All three of us can score goals. There’s no competition for points between us personally but as a line we try and outscore the other two.
“That’s the sort of healthy competition you need within a team, but between the three of us, there’s no competition.
“When one of us scores, the chances are the other two get the assists anyway!”
*Raiders will be holding their annual end of season presentation evening on Saturday April 28 in the ice rink bar.
The evening will begin at 7pm, and will involve the presentation of all the player awards, shirt auction, raffle, and much more.
There will be music and a buffet with tickets available from Sunday, costing £6 for adults, £3 for under-16s, with under5s free of charge.
One of the awards being presented will be the Supporters Player of the Year, and fans will be able to vote for at the Invicta game on Sunday. Voting slips will be available from the programme desk.
Also, as proud sponsors of AJ Smith, the Gold & Blue Army are offering a chance to win his signed game-worn away shirt. To be in with a chance of winning this, you will need to buy a ticket, costing just £2. These will also be available at the game on Sunday, from Mel or in the DJ box.
The winning ticket will be drawn at the presentation evening, and the winner will be presented with their shirt by AJ.
