Surrey's Jade Dernbach spoke to London24 after the draw with Worcestershire

Surrey bowler Jade Dernbach admitted that his side felt the pitch played as it was expected to do over the course of time the players had on the field.

Less than 200 overs were bowled over the course of the game and the paceman admitted that the game was difficult due to the lack of playing time, with only day three going the distance.

“It’s obviously quite a difficult game when we got on,” Dernbach told London24. “When the game stops and starts it’s quite hard to pick up any momentum and it was a tricky wicket at times with overhead conditions and I thought we fought really well to get in a position today where we could have got a result out of the game and that’s the best we could have done.

“If you look around the country that’s the way things have gone.

“There are a lot of low scores around. Conditions are going to be bowler friendly.

“You’re going to get yourself into these sort of positions.

“We always knew if we could get on at some point that there was going to be a chance of a result.

“We want to, come the fourth innings, we just want to be in a position to win a cricket match. We had an opportunity and the weather came in took that away from us.”

On day three, 19 wickets fell as the pitch looked to be misbehaving but the batsmen on day four had an easier ride with Michael Klinger cruising to 69.

“I think when you look at the overs that were bowled [183.4 overs] in the game.

“That’s generally how it works at the Oval.

“It might offer a bit at the start and then tends to flatten out.

“Had you played the full four days then at the end of day two, day three then the pitch flattens out.

“Because of the weather it condensed the game in a short space of time.”

With the home side chasing quick runs the 26-year-old played a very entertaining innings, scoring 22 runs off 15 balls.

“It was just important that we could get some runs on the board,” Dernbach admitted. “When you’re in a position that you’re creating a lead then every run you score counts almost double.

“Every time I contribute with the bat and it’s going to help the team then I’m over the moon at that.”

The highlight of the innings was a wonderful straight six off Alan Richardson, a shot that top order batsmen would have been proud of.

“It was one of the better ones I have produced of late,” Dernbach said. “I’ve been working hard at my batting recently and I look to contribute as much as I can.

“Any little bit I can do with the bat can put the team into a better position.”
