Surrey's Tom Maynard admitted that net sessions were 'interesting' at the Kia Oval

The Surrey batsman paid tribute to the pace bowling trio of Jade Dernbach, Stuart Meaker and Chris Tremlett

Surrey batsman Tom Maynard admitted that batting in the Kia Oval’s nets can sometimes be a case of self-preservation given the quality of the county’s bowlers.

The south Londoners have Chris Tremlett, Jade Dernbach and Stuart Meaker in their ranks and the pace trio have the ability to reach speeds in excess of 90 miles an hour.

“Stuart is quick,” Maynard said. “Jade is pretty nasty to face and Trems is not the easiest either to be fair.

“There are some pretty interesting net sessions at our place.

“There’s a little bit of self-preservation at times.

“A few of the guys aren’t too keen to net sometimes but we’ve got a fantastic group of talent here and it’s a pleasure to play cricket for Surrey.”

Meaker starred with the ball in the recent four-day game against Somerset, claiming a career best 8-52 with a fantastic spell of fast bowling and Maynard believes he could go on to claim England honours this year.

“I don’t see why not if he keeps bowling like that,” the batsman added. “He bowled one fantastic spell against Somerset.

“If he keeps bowling the way he does, I’m sure he’ll get recognition sooner rather than later.”

The 23-year-old batsman top scored in yesterday’s 60 run victory over Durham with 77 and he was pleased to play a match-winning innings for his side.

“It’s nice to contribute,” Maynard added. “Usually the boys get us off to a flyer but it was slightly different today which meant I had to play slightly more conservatively at the start.

“We’ve carried a lot of momentum from last year after winning it and the boys are really confident in this competition.”
