QPR boss: Managing the finances is not in a manager’s remit

QPR manager Harry Redknapp insists that he is unsure what the true state of QPR’s finances are.

Rangers’ wage bill doubled to £56million, ending May 2012, before their heavy outlay on wages in the last two transfer windows.

While turnover rose from £34.6million to £74million, wages soared from £27.6million to £56million in a season in which QPR only managed to secure survival on the final day.

A host of expensive players have since arrived at Loftus Road, with summer arrivals such as Park Ji-sung, Julio Cesar and Jose Bosingwa followed in January by Samba and Remy.

“It’s important [to have support from the owner],” Redknapp said. “I haven’t seen [the figures].

“When you’re a football manager, we’re not involved in that side of the business. “We’re not involved in players’ wages. We work on Saturday, in the dressing rooms.

“The financial side of it, I don’t know. I really don’t know.

“It’s not in the remit of a football manager anymore. If the debts are high then the chairman and the board know that. They know what they’re doing.”

Redknapp was grateful for the support that chairman Tony Fernandes gave him in the transfer window.

“I think you have to [let players go] if the owner wants to sell.

“You don’t go to them and say I want to buy a player. The two big signings, he did all the work in that. I couldn’t take the credit. He met the players and the deals.

“It’s up to them. You couldn’t get nicer people than the people running QPR.”

Rangers have been allowing players to leave the club with the likes of Joey Barton leaving on loan to Marseille.

He said: “I think 10-11 went out. Faurlin went to Palermo and others left. There would have been nothing in the wages. That’s not reflected in the results.”
