Rangers will not sign players for commercial reasons, insists Fernandes

QPR chairman Tony Fernandes insists that the club’s commercial interests in Asia will have no bearing on any further signings this summer.

A hugely successful pre-season tour of the Far East, coupled with the signing of Ji-Sung Park from Manchester United, has allowed Fernandes to successfully establish the QPR brand in Asia.

The Rs have also shown interest in Celtic’s South Korean midfielder Ki Sung-Yeung, and face competition from Arsenal to secure the 23-year-old’s services.

However, the chairman insists that manager Mark Hughes will have the final say on any more new arrivals.

“We’re not going to sign a player if it doesn’t make sense to the manager,” Fernandes said. “I own an airline which flies to Korea and is having huge growth in Korea, but that’s a bonus – a fantastic icing on the cake.

“Let me make it clear that we’re not going to sign a player just because it’s good for AirAsia or our sponsors.”
