Jay Bothroyd is determined to challenge for a place in QPR’s starting line-up this season, and is looking forward to competing with new signing Andy Johnson.

As well as former Fulham man Johnson, Bothroyd, who scored in the R’s first match of pre-season against a Sabah Select XI in Kota Kinabalu on Tuesday, will battle it out with Bobby Zamora and Heider Helguson for a place in the team.

“It’s definitely a big challenge,” the striker told QPR’s official website.

“But it’s all good for the squad. When you’re signing players like that (Johnson), all you can do is raise your game, keep working hard and stay positive.

“Last season was a difficult one for me,” he added. “But I’m looking to work hard and get more opportunities this year.”
