National One preview: Barking v Sedgley Park, Gale Street, Saturday, 3pm
Inconsistency has been the main problem for Barking this season, but head coach Tim Usasz wants his side to deliver two 80-minute performances to end their two- year National One stay on a positive note, writes Colin Munford.
Wins this season have come home and away against third-placed Fylde, while they have also picked up victories at Gale Street over the top two sides Ealing Trailfinders and Jersey.
And it is consistency that the American international wants from their final home game of the season this weekend against Sedgley Park and their final fixture away at Blaydon the following Saturday, April 28.
“We have been our own worst enemies all season long,” said Usasz. “What we work on during the week doesn’t always come to fruition, but we have proved on occasions that we have the talent, but that has happened all too little over the course of the season.
“The wins over Jersey and Fylde at home were massive performances from the boys. But the biggest issue has been that we have played well for 10, 15, 20 minutes of games and not for the whole of the match.
“It has been in patches that we have shown brilliance.
“When we get the ball we are very dangerous, but the defence has been inconsistent.
“I said to the boys before Saturday that we wanted to go down with a win at home and a win away. By not winning at Stourbridge it means we have to win the final two games. That is something I think we’re capable of.”
For Saturday’s home clash Usasz may be able to call on centre Alex Dodge as he hopes to recover in time from concussion, while props Sean Mullins and Marcus Bloomberg will be available after missing the Stourbridge defeat.
But Usasz insists he won’t divert his attention from these two remaining games and will wait until the end of the season before discussing his future with the club.
“I’ll talk about the future once the season is over,” he added. “My main focus at the moment is to finish the season well.”
