Tottenham head coach Andre Villas-Boas in confident that Roberto Soldado will come good for Spurs this season.

The Spaniard has scored four goals in 13 appearances for the north Londoners since joining the club from Valencia for £26million, however all but one of them have come from the penalty spot.

The 28-year-old should have added to his tally against Manchester United but fired over the bar when well placed after a great run from Paulinho.

But the Portuguese boss was quick to defend his record signing, who was applauded off by Tottenham supporters.

“He works very hard for the team,” he said. “He works his socks off.

“A striker lives off goals. It’s important for Soldado to find the back of the net.

“We’ll be patient with him. He doesn’t need to show his qualities.

“We need to be patient with him. His CV speaks for himself. He will unlock his potential.”

With Soldado being the preferred choice for the lone striker role this season it has led to rumours that Jermain Defoe will be leaving the club in January to make a move to America.

But Villas-Boas insisted that he is happy with the England international’s contributions.

“I’m happy with Defoe’s performances,” he added. “He came on today to try to help the team.

“He’s our top goalscorer. He has my support and I’m willing to keep him for the future.”
