Former boss: Spurs manager target has as good a chance to succeed at current club

Former Everton manager Joe Royle does not expect David Moyes to leave Goodison Park for White Hart Lane, despite rumours linking Tottenham with the Scot.

Royle, who guided the Toffees to the 1995 FA Cup believes that Everton are closer to Tottenham than many give them credit for.

“The timing would be strange for David to leave,” Royle said. “He’s probably closer now to what he would deem his best side at Everton throughout his 10 years.

“He’s found a goalscorer in Jelavic, he’s hopefully got Pienaar back and Fellaini has finished the season as well as I’ve seen him play – his performance at Manchester United was outstanding. Defensively he’s got options too, so this is probably his best chance.

“You have to look at it and say have Spurs got a better chance than Everton have?

“Probably, as long as Bale stays, they have, but it’s close and who’s to say there’s going to be money to spend at Spurs?

“I think Harry was disillusioned at how much money there was available for him so the grass isn’t always greener elsewhere.”

The former Everton manager believes that David Moyes will remain and has the full backing of supporters.

“Like Alan Ball said ‘Once Everton has touched you nothing is the same,’ and I think David Moyes is finding that out,” Royle added.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if he stays. He’s had 10 terrific years and stabilised the club.

“There was a spell last season when people were asking questions, but I think the majority of Evertonians would say he’s done a terrific job and want him to stay.”
