Spurs boss looking for cure for White Hart Lane anxiety

Tottenham head coach Andre Villas-Boas believes that anxiety is a factor for his side’s poor home form.

Spurs have only won two out of their first seven games at White Hart Lane and were surprisingly beaten by Wigan on Saturday.

And the Portuguese boss believes that the anxiety when things don’t go his side’s way plays a factor in the timid nature of the performances.

“Sometimes we’re just not clear in our decision making. It can happen because of anxiety.

“Sometimes we will have days like this. We try to do everything right and we end up doing everything wrong.

“I assume responsibility for the defeat and we have to lift our players and now focus on the next two important away games [against Manchester City and Arsenal].”

Villas-Boas was not shirking his responsibility and offered himself up as the target to be criticised and not the players, who were poor for 90 minutes against the Latics.

“I accept responsibility for the defeat,” he added. “The anxiety comes from the fact that the game doesn’t run the way you want.

“You’re at home, you think you’re going to be superior and yet it doesn’t run as well as you wanted.

“Then you find yourself on the back foot and this raises the anxiety because you ask yourself: ‘why don’t you do things properly?’

“But I think this is the nature of every human being.”
