Spurs signing wants to match Tottenham board’s “massive ambition”

The Iceland international joined Spurs last week after an eye-catching loan spell with Swansea – and he is keen to get down to the business of battling for trophies, both domestically and on the continent.

“This club is always improving and there’s massive ambition in the board – they’re signing some big players and Gareth [Bale] has just signed a new contract,” Sigurdsson told Spurs TV.

“You want to be aiming a little bit higher than last season, and I think everyone’s looking forward to the new season to begin.

“The main target with Swansea last year was to stay in the league, but here it’s a big club and you want to be aiming to win titles and silverware.

“The most important thing is that we get off to a good start, especially in the league, and get some good momentum and then take it into the Europa League - obviously there’s the FA Cup too. You want to be playing for silverware in every competition.

“I’d like to fit in quite quickly and get to know the boys as soon as I can, and then everything else is easier. I’d like to play as much as I can and I want to win trophies with this club, because the squad is more than good enough to do it.”

Sigurdsson’s arrival was announced the day after Andre Villas-Boas was unveiled as Spurs’ new head coach – and the Tottenham midfielder has enjoyed his first couple of days under the new boss.

“He [Villas-Boas] is great, he’s very positive about coming here and he feels privileged to coach these players,” Sigurdsson continued.

“He’s really lively in the training sessions as well and I think all the boys are enjoying everything we’ve been doing with the football – but it’s also very hard. It looks good with him, and all of the other staff.

“I think you can see in the first couple of days here, we’ve done a few sessions and everyone’s quite fit, and that’s something that’s only going to improve in the next few days.

“I’m very happy to be here, it’s a massive club with fantastic players. This training ground [in Chigwell] is fantastic but we’re moving to a new one after the pre-season trip to America, and that one is unbelievable.

“It won’t be too bad going to work there! It’s probably one of the best in Europe, if not in the world at the moment.”
