TOMORROW (Sunday) is the Virgin London Marathon 2012, with more than 40,000 people expected to run through the capital in support of various charities. Here the Welwyn Hatfield Times profiles one of the runners from the borough competing in the marathon.

WHEN her mum was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010, Jennifer Chilton was devastated.

But her successful battle has proved to be the inspiration behind the 25-year-old’s drive to raise vital funds for charity.

Since then Jennifer, of Welwyn Garden City, has taken part in many races, from 5ks to half-marathons, and last year even climbed Ben Nevis, all to raise money and awareness of the most common cancers in both women and men.

But the Virgin London Marathon will be Jennifer’s biggest challenge to date.

She will be part of TeamPB, which will be raising money for The Prostate Cancer Charity and Breast Cancer Care.

Jennifer, a customer service manager at Waitrose, said: “I have always wanted to take part in the London Marathon and it means so much to me to be running it for the charities who work so hard to support men, and women just like my mum.

“This will be the first marathon I have ever run and I am proud all the money I am raising is going to two amazing charities.”

She said: “It is so important to run for TeamPB as it means I am raising awareness for the men and women in my life.

“I have many friends who in some way have been affected by these cancers and by taking on this challenge I can raise money to help both charities fight against them, supporting people throughout their diagnosis, treatment and providing aftercare.”

Her aim, she told the Welwyn Hatfield Times, is to finish in around four-and-a-half hours, but like so many first-timers, just completing the course is the primary objective.

Jennifer’s old school has been getting behind her marathon drive. She returned to Homerswood Primary School to take an assembly, telling pupils about TeamPB and the work of the two charities.

The next day, a non-uniform day was held at the school, bringing in £187 which has been donated to Jennifer’s efforts.

To further boost her fundraising drive, Jennifer also held a bag packing event at Waitrose in Bridge Road, WGC.
