Elite League: Lakeside Hammers 42 Poole Pirates 48
Darcy Ward celebrated his 20th birthday by helping to inspire Poole Pirates to a come from behind 48-42 victory over Lakeside Hammers last night.
And Lakeside co-promoter Jon Cook felt his side’s sloppy riding in the middle of the meeting cost them dear.
Cook said: “We always knew it was going to be a difficult test but we should have been going into the final heat in the lead.
“Too many times there was some sloppy riding from our boys, we dropped some stupid points.
“But in Darcy Ward and Chris Holder they have a fine top two riders, and we won’t see anything like this duo for some time.
“It’s an early eye opener but hopefully the boys can get back on track against Peterborough next Friday.”
The Purfleet side started brightly but the impressive Australian duo of Ward and GP star Chris Holder turned on the style, and proved too much for the hosts as Poole comfortably secured victory in the end with the pair securing paid maximums from their five rides.
Despite falling behind in the opening heat, a maximum from reserve duo Robert Mear and Richie Worrall helped the Hammers into an early lead
The former was on form again to hold second spot behind skipper Lee Richardson as Lakeside took a 15-9 lead after heat four.
Fresh off the back of consecutive heat advantages in eight and nine for the Hammers, Ward superbly team rode with Dennis Andersson for a maximum to put them right back in the mix.
And now it was time for the Pirates to put together back to back heat advantages to push them into a 37-35 win and in the final heat Ward and Holder combined to see off Peter Karlsson and Watt to seal the win.
The only positives to take from the performance was the home debut of Worrall who picked up two heat wins, while fellow reserve Mear started brightly before fading.
Lakeside Hammers 42: Peter Karlsson 8+1 (from 5 rides), Stuart Robson 2 (3), Davey Watt 8 (5), Kim Nilsson 2+1 (4), Lee Richardson 7 (4), Richie Worrall 8 (4), Robert Mear 7+2 (5).
Poole Pirates 48: Chris Holder 14+1 (5) Ricky Kling 6+1 (4), Darcy Ward 14+1 (5), Dennis Andersson 6 (4), Adrian Miedzinski 5(4), Ludvig Lindgren 2+1 (5), Kyle Howarth 1 (3).
