Grid penalty and handling problem make for a difficult drive in Texas for Mike Conway.

Car problems hit Mike Conway’s chances of a top ten finish in the latest round of the Indycar series at the Texas Motor Speedway.

The AJ Foyt driver from Sevenoaks qualified in eighth, but had to start in 18th after an unscheduled engine change landed him with a grid penalty.

From the start it was clear something wasn’t right with his Honda car though, as he struggled to make ground up on the field.

However he did manage to make six places up on the 30th lap when he pitted after the first caution.

But he soon dropped back down to 17th and eventually finished in 16th in the 228 lap race.

It was found that a stay on the underwing of the car had broken which caused the under pressure on the car to shift from the front to the rear depending on where the car was on the track making it difficult to handle.

Conway said: “It was a really long night. I thought we’d have a good car after yesterday’s performance but it was a real handful from the start.

“At the start we were suffering from a lot of understeer so we put more front wing on but then the circuit changed. We then had a problem with the weight jacker andthe car got really loose.

“I had some big moments and so I had to come in to the pits so the team could take off some front wing. The car was then a little less of a handful to drive but it kept picking up front grip even though we were taking wing out so it became a case of just trying to hang on and count down the laps.

“We really wanted a good result here but unfortunately it just wasn’t to be.”

Around 25 per cent of the population self-identity as having no religion yet still enjoy the fun of Christmas (Photo by Oli Scarff/Getty Images)

It’s Christmas time. We know this by the light-adorned streets, the mobility hazard posed by boxes of Quality Street, Roses and Celebrations in every supermarket’s entrance and, of course, the incessant radio-plays of Mariah Carey’s All I Want for Christmas Is You.
