Tom Roche the man to beat in Mazda MX5 Championship at Snetterton

17:31 27 April 2012

The Mazda MX5 Championship is the most popular sports car series in the country and will need five races, which are all guaranteed to be full of action, to accommodate everybody this weekend at Snetterton.

In the opening races at Silverstone, reigning champion Tom Roche proved to be the most successful driver with two victories while James Blake-Baldwin, Scott Leach, Brian Chandler and Charlie Chapman were also winners and will be determined to take the fight to Roche this weekend.

Other notable drivers to watch out for, having recently transferred to the series, are former Mini Challenge front runner Jason Greatrex, Chris Dawkins who was a race winner in Eurocars and former Porsche pilot Carl Powell.

The MX5 Cup, for the bigger Mk3 version of the Japanese sports car, while not as popular as its smaller cousin is just a competitive with Chrissy Palmer keen to build upon his twin victories at the Northampton circuit while Luke Herbert was the winner in race one.

Newmarket racer Gerry Taylor will be determined to add to his twin victories in the opening Porsche Championship races at Oulton Park on his home circuit but will face stiff opposition from rival Richard Sykes.

Jason Cooper will be defending his Ford Fiesta Class C series lead at the Norfolk venue after winning the opening two races. His chief rivals have been John Langridge and Nicholas Bowers who will be out for revenge in their twin events.

In the multi class Fiesta races David Elson has reigned supreme and will probably continue in the same manner in their two events.

The Fiesta Junior series got off to a steady start at Silverstone with Freddie Lee, son of short oval legend Barry, winning the first race for the Thetford-based Advent Motorsport squad. Charles Ladell was victorious in race two and with the series set to grow race wins in the early rounds will pay dividends.

In the Open Sportscar Series Tony Sinclair will take some defeating but Andrew Kimpton will be chasing him with the first race set to start on Saturday at 2.15pm and will continue from 9am on Sunday.

It’s Christmas time. We know this by the light-adorned streets, the mobility hazard posed by boxes of Quality Street, Roses and Celebrations in every supermarket’s entrance and, of course, the incessant radio-plays of Mariah Carey’s All I Want for Christmas Is You.
